SYDNEY – Self-confessed ships tragic Philip Thorniley has corrected an item in the Sydney Morning Herald about the Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, and Pacific Jewel, P&O’s latest superliner, which was welcomed into Sydney last weekend.
He writes, “She (the G-G) didn’t ‘launch’ the ship. Ships only get launched once – at the shipyard when they slip into the water for the first time.
“It’s rather like people – you’re born (launched) once (whatever some religious folk might say) and thereafter, circumstances may find you changing your name – think Susan Rossiter/Peacock/Sangster/Renouf
“The ship Ms. Bryce named Pacific Jewel started life in 1990 as Crown Princess, becoming successively A`Rosa Blu, AIDAblu and
Ocean Village Two before taking her latest name.
“From accounts received from British friends who’ve sailed on her, the ship should make a great addition to P&O’s fleet here.â€
