In a boost for tourism, the Thailand government has approved a tax cut on alcohol and for entertainment venues. Taxes on wine will be halved from 10% to 5% while the 10% tax on spirits will be scrapped. Also, the excise tax levied on entertainment venues will be halved to 5%. They are temporary measures which will last until the end of 2024. It is the latest move to boost the night time entertainment industry after opening hours were extended to 4am recently in major tourism areas. Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Lavaron Sangsnit said additional spending by tourists will offset any cut in the tax revenues. The government said it reached the amended tourist arrivals target of 29 million in 2023. It is forecasting 34 million tourist arrivals for 2024.  

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has teamed up with China based online travel platform Fliggy to promote Thailand tourism. A letter of intent was inked to formally outline areas of cooperation. They will identify locations as ‘smart scenic destinations to improve Chinese tourists' experiences. They will also collaborate on promoting emerging Thailand tourism destinations, as ‘potential hidden gems.’ Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Minister of Tourism and Sports, said: "This signing of the LOI is set to pave the way for cooperation between TAT and Fliggy to consistently promote Thailand tourism.” “This agreement will further strengthen our relationship and formally outline areas of cooperation." “The LOI will formalise the TAT-Fliggy partnership, while further enhancing the cooperation in several areas.” They will collaborate on promotional campaigns specifically for Chinese tourists during key events such as Double 11, Golden Week, and Chinese New Year. To help boost safety for tourists, a 24/7 Chinese customer service hotline will be set up to communicate with Chinese tourists. Fliggy is part of the Alibaba Group and one of China's top travel service providers. Previously, Fliggy and TAT conducted joint campaigns during the post-pandemic reopening with livestream broadcasts promoting special Thailand tourism packages.

Speaking on the sidelines at World Travel Market, Siripakorn Cheawsamoot Deputy Governor for International Marketing. Europe Africa Middle East and Americas, exclusively speaks about Thailand’s focus on meaningful people-to-people connections. This underpins Thailand tourism’s ‘Meaningful Relationship’ campaign, which encompasses immersion in local communities, food and experiences. “Thailand always begins with the local people and their hospitality. That is why Thais are a very important resource,” he said. Siripakorn also shared the philosophy behind the Responsible Thailand Awards and the implementation of its own Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs). This awards tourism businesses with a STAR rating for their ‘sustainable approach and management.’ Siripakorn said there are currently more than 250 businesses with a STAR rating.

The Amazing Thailand Press Conference was presented by TAT Governor, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, along with fellow TAT executives. Ms. Thapanee said: “The new ‘Meaningful Relationship’ concept is designed to encourage travellers to engage in a meaningful connection with local communities and Thailand.” This encompasses nature, the Thai people and the country itself. “When travellers form a relationship with the people they meet and the place they visit, they will have an opportunity of creating lifelong friends” The concept will be incorporated into TAT’s ongoing promotion of Thailand as a sustainable and responsible tourism destination. To this end, TAT has partnered with the Thai Ecotourism and Adventure Travel Association (TEATA) to promote its sustainable travel messaging to the UK market. During 2023 Ms Thapanee cited a biggert focus on Thai food and cultural activities as a way to increase people-to-people connections. TAT has developed and implemented its own Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs) in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations Development Programme. TAT’s STGs encompass the entire tourism industry in a Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR) system. Businesses that comply with goals attain a corresponding number of stars. Currently, there nearly 300 businesses with STAR certifications in Thailand. Meanwhile, TEATA, in collaboration with Tourlink, has developed seven carbon-neutral travel routes for travellers to explore Thailand. Featured destinations include Bangkok, Ratchaburi, Phangnga, Trat, Phetchaburi, and the three Isan provinces of Udon Thani, Nong Khai, and Loei. For the UK market, TAT will place a focus on luxury, wellness and responsible travel segments to boost spending and to encourage longer stays in local areas. For 2024, Thailand is targeting over 900,000 UK tourist arrivals.

For the UK market, TAT will place focus on potential segments with higher spending, a tendency to stay longer, and those wanting to explore local areas. These segments include luxury, wellness and responsible travel. From 1 January - 31 October 2023, Thailand recorded over 21.6 million arrivals and generated over THB927 billion. The top five markets are Malaysia, China, South Korea, India and Russia. The UK market contributed 617,017 tourists.

In a big move to boost Thailand tourism, Chinese tourists will get a visa exemption. It is a temporary measuring kicking off from 25 September 2023 to 29 February 2024. It is also valid for nationals of Kazakhstan. Chinese and Kazakhstani travellers will be given the tourist visa exemption for a stay of up to 30 days. “This stimulus visa scheme forms measures to boost the Thai economy through travel and tourism,” the Ministry of Tourism said. “Ultimately, it will help revive Thai tourism and reach the revenue target set for this year.” During the five-month tourist visa exemption period, Thailand is targeting up to 2.8 million Chinese tourists It forecasts about 130,000 from Kazakhstan. As of 10 September 2023, Thailand has so far welcomed 2.2 million Chinese visitors, the number two source market behind Malaysia. The visa exemption period starts just before the busy Golden Week holidays in China.

China tourist arrivals to Thailand have already passed the one million milestone. Although China was late to resume outbound tourism and was done in a gradual way in early 2023, Thailand still remains a top destination. It accounts for about 10% of all inbound tourism. As of mid-May, Thailand has welcomed about 9.5 million foreign tourists so far this year. The Thai government expects to meet its earlier target of three million China tourist arrivals this year. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has just launched a China focused marketing campaign. Called ‘Trusted Thailand, (Taiguo Yue Wan Yue Kaixin’) it is designed to showcase Thailand as a safe and welcoming destination for Chinese visitors. TAT is more optimistic and expects as many as five million China tourist visits by the end of the year.

Thailand tourism officials expects over six million travelers from Europe this year. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Yuthasak Supasorn updated delegates at ITB Berlin. It accounts for around 80% of pre-pandemic levels. Yuthasak admits there are still obstacles to reaching a full recovery. These include the Ukraine conflict, the cost of living crisis and a shortage of workers across Thailand. There is also currently a shortage of flight capacity to boost tourist numbers further. Thailand also plans to increase the length of stay for tourist visas from 30 to 45 days.            

Thailand welcomed over two million foreign visitors in January, as Thailand tourism continued its rebound. It was helped by the return of travellers from China. Thailand tourism ministry data recorded 2.14 million foreign arrivals. It was down on December when it received 2.24 million visitors. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha expects as many as 30 million foreign arrivals this year. That is still down on Thailand’s pre-pandemic levels of nearly 40 million. China is traditionally the top source market. The top source markets in January were Malaysia and Russia.

China Airlines Adds Capacity to Thailand

  China Airlines announces the launch of direct flight service from Taipei to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand’s largest city. The addition of four weekly flights on the Chiang Mai route means China Airlines now offers 27 roundtrip flights to Thailand each week, greatly boosting convenience for business and tourist travel between the two regions. Thailand plans to introduce the THB300 tourist fee this summer. It is expected to be implemented from June 2023, following a meeting of government officials. The tourist fee proposal was first mooted last year but was suspended to avoid hindering the tourism recovery. It is still subject to cabinet approval. Funds from the fee will be used in part to support foreign visitors’ medical expenses after accidents; It will also be used for further tourism development. Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn expects about 25 million tourist arrivals this year.
