New York, NJ airports to get limited time free Wi-Fi

Wednesday, 26 Jun, 2014 0

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has finally given the go-ahead for free public Wi-Fi at New York-area airports.

The Port Authority has reached an agreement with Internet provider Boingo Wireless Inc for access at JFK International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, La Guardia Airport and Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N.Y., offering free Wi-Fi to all but only for the first 30 minutes.

After a half-hour is up, travelers will be asked to pay for extended time online.

A day pass with an unlimited quota will cost $7.95 and a monthly pass is priced at $9.95.

The service will be operational at the airports in the fall.

The authority’s executive director, Patrick Foye had originally planned to offer users completely free, unlimited Wi-Fi access paid for with advertising revenue but was "unlikely to be a significant source of revenue."

He said the roll-out will cost the authority around $400,000 during the first year of operations.

New York City council members had long lobbied hard for free wireless service and last week said the lack of one was "becoming a greater nuisance each day."

The Port Authority said it collected $8 million in revenue from the existing paid Wi-Fi service during 2013.
