BA captain in critical condition after air show crash

Saturday, 24 Aug, 2015 0

British Airways captain Andy Hill, the pilot of the Hawker Hunter which crashed at the Shoreham airshow on Saturday, remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Hill, 51, who served in the RAF, was pulled from the wreckage after the jet slammed into the A27 during an aerial display.

The crash killed 11 people but it is feared the death toll could rise.

Hill’s wife Ellen, also a BA captain, is reportedly by his bedside at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Colleagues have described Hill as a highly-experienced pilot who was a regular at air shows.

He works for Ultimate High, which provides aerobatic flight experiences for corporate groups and individuals.

Known at Ultimate High as Hilz, he started his career flying Bulldogs on a University Air Squadron, and after excelling on fast jet training was ‘creamed off’ and went straight into instructing on the Jet Provost.

"He then operated the Harrier GR5/7 in Germany. After flying the A340 and B757/767 his day job is captaining an Airbus," says the website.

"He is a very experienced formation instructor and display pilot, and regularly displays the RV-8, Jet Provost and Hunter."
