World’s biggest Buddha on the way

Sunday, 14 Jul, 2004 0

Authorities in India has revealed plans to construct the biggest Buddha in the world – a huge statue that will be three times the size of New York’s Statue of Liberty.

According to the BBC News website, the project will be sited in the town of Kushinagar, in Uttar Pradesh state, where Buddha died some 2,500 years ago.

The website reports that the statue, which is being funded by the Uttar Pradesh government and a Japanese religious trust, will be 150 metres tall – by contrast, the Statue of Liberty is just 45 metres high.

The BBC quotes local officials as saying that the statue will be the world’s biggest statue and will house a 17-storey temple.

However, the statue may not be the world’s largest for long; there are reportedly plans to build a statue in Houston, Texas, which will be even larger.
