Baggage handlers vote for strike

Saturday, 06 Jul, 2004 0

Summer flight chaos is being widely predicted for the UK after baggage handlers voted to strike in a dispute over pay.

TGWU members working for the Aviance services group agreed that they would strike after being offered a 2.5 per cent pay rise and, while new talks will take place last week, most media commentators are predicting that the action will go ahead, even if date have not yet been named.

The BBC News website, which reports that the union members voted four-to-one in favour of action, quotes the TGWU national officer Brendan Gold as saying that they had been offered a bad deal.

He reportedly said: “Everyone is aware that aviation is a tough market and nobody is better placed to know that than the baggage handlers and check-in staff. They also know that the volume of their work is increasing as the industry gets busier and passenger numbers break record levels.

“That being the case, they know a bad deal when they see one, which is why we urge Aviance to listen to its workforce and act to improve the deal on offer and so avoid a damaging dispute.”

Aviance employs more than 2,000 baggage handlers at 17 airports around the UK.
